As an athlete, you may already know the importance of following safety measures and protocols. You might have heard stories about how it’s easy to develop any sort of injury if you aren’t careful. The same goes for your smile, so you should take steps to keep it protected if you know you’re at risk of facial blows, such as during contact or combat sports. Here are three types of dental emergencies that are more common for athletes and how to avoid them.

1.)  Cracked or Chipped Tooth

Your enamel is the hardest substance that your body makes, but this doesn’t mean it’s invincible. It can still become cracked or chipped if it takes a strong enough hit. When a tooth becomes damaged, you are likely to experience some discomfort, but you may be at a higher risk of infection as well. Thankfully, this issue can oftentimes be fixed with a restoration like a crown or filling if it’s minor.

2.)  Fractured Roots

Teeth are much more than just what you see above the gumline. Their roots extend into your jawbone, helping hold your smile in place. An athlete who receives severe enough oral trauma may have damage that extends down into this part. If this happens, then a root canal may be needed. This will remove the inner tooth pulp, avoiding infection and relieving pain. However, if it cannot be saved, then an extraction may be recommended instead.

3.)  Knocked-Out Tooth

In some combat or full-contact sports, the injury may result in you getting a tooth knocked out completely. This scenario can definitely leave you worried about your oral health, but it’s important you act fast.

You should first rinse your tooth in a still bowl of water, then hold it in your cheek or place it in a glass of milk. It’s crucial you visit your dentist within an hour to improve your odds of salvaging it. There may be some cases where it can’t, then your provider can talk to you about replacement options.

How Can I Avoid Dental Emergencies When Playing Sports?

The good news is you don’t have to give up sports to avoid dental emergencies like the ones above. You can take precautions and preventive measures to protect your smile. These are some handy tips to remember:

  • Wear a mouthguard if you know you’re at risk of a facial blow. These appliances are designed to redistribute the force across it and your teeth instead of just at a point.
  • Keep up with brushing and flossing twice every day. Oral health issues like decay and gum disease can make your grin a bit weaker since they compromise the structures. Preventing them can help them stay stronger.
  • Have routine visits with your dentist. By seeing them twice a year, they can ensure your grin is the best it deserves to be and even help you get a mouthguard.

Regardless, if you do end up with a dental emergency, then getting urgent care is important. While you may be at a higher risk of them as an athlete, follow the tips above to feel confident playing your sport.
