Everything is going great until <em>crunch!<\/em> You accidentally bite down on an un-popped kernel. Pain shoots through your mouth and you spit out pieces of your tooth into your hand! What should you do? Here are some tips from a dentist on how to handle common <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyhowarddds.com\/emergency-care.html\">dental emergencies.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Knocked-Out Tooth <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When a tooth is knocked out, time is truly of the essence. You\nhave maybe an hour at most to get to your dentist\u2019s office before the tooth is no\nlonger viable for reattachment. After you call your dentist, gently rinse off\nyour tooth and try to place it back in the socket. Do this by biting down on a\npiece of cloth. If you can\u2019t, then hold the tooth in your cheek pouch or in a\ncontainer full of milk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Broken or Chipped Tooth <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gather up the pieces of the tooth if you can find them, as\nyour dentist may be able to attach them later. To curb swelling and pain, apply\na cold compress to the outside of your mouth for 10 minutes on, then 10 minutes\noff. You could also take an over-the-counter pain medication as the bottle\ndirects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dislodged Dental Crown <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your dental crown falls off, don\u2019t worry. Wash off the\ncrown and try to place it back on the tooth with a piece of dental cement\n(which can be found at most drugstores) or sugar-free gum. Whatever you do, do\nNOT use glue of any kind to reattach your restoration, since that could permanently\ndamage your underlying tooth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Severe Toothache<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First, floss around the area and rinse with lukewarm\nsaltwater. Your toothache may be caused by a piece of food stuck between your\nteeth. if that doesn\u2019t work, take store-bought pain relievers and\/or use a cold\ncompress. If your toothache is accompanied by a high fever, you need to call\nyour dentist right away, as that could be a sign that you have an infection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contact Your Dentist <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing that all of these dental emergencies have in\ncommon is that they warrant contacting your dentist as soon as you can. If you put\noff treatment for a dental emergency, it could only worsen the problem in the\nlong run. In the case of a knocked-out tooth, you\u2019d have to get your tooth\nreplaced, which can be expensive.
