Very few things can ruin your day faster than a toothache. A\nsudden pain shooting through your mouth can make you unable to focus on\nanything else until the problem is solved. Besides making the discomfort go\naway, the next thing on your mind is usually \u201cwhy is this happening?\u201d A dentist<\/a> is here\nto talk about the top 10 reasons why you have a toothache. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

1. Tooth Decay <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most likely reason your tooth hurts is because you have\na cavity. In order for the cavity to be painful, decay has to have reached the\nsensitive layer of the tooth underneath the enamel, called the dentin. If your\ndull ache turns into a sharp, intense pain that makes it hard to go about your\ndaily life, that might be a sign that decay has reached the center of the\ntooth. You might need a root canal to relieve you of this pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Abscess <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Is it hard for you to tell which tooth your pain is coming\nfrom? You might have a dental abscess, which occurs when decay affects the root\nof the tooth. This issue needs to be dealt with as soon as possible, as\notherwise it could result in bone and tissue loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Gum Disease <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you have a dull pain above or below your teeth, it might\nbe a sign of gum disease. Gum disease is an infection characterized by swollen,\nred, or tender gums that may bleed easily. If you notice that your gums have\nbecome inflamed, see your dentist immediately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Tooth Fractures <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Minor chips and cracks in your tooth may not hurt, but once\nthe fracture reaches the sensitive inner layer, it can cause excruciating pain.\nThis is why it\u2019s best to get even small injuries to the teeth treated as soon\nas possible before they get worse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Sensitivity to Heat and Cold <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If eating or drinking something hot or cold sends a searing\npain through your mouth, you may have sensitive teeth. This can happen because\nyou whitened your teeth recently, or it can be a result of worn-down enamel and\nexposure of the dentin. Use toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. If that\ndoesn\u2019t work, ask your dentist for more options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Damaged Fillings <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fillings often protect sensitive areas of the tooth that\nhave been hurt by decay or injury. When fillings are damaged, it can cause\nsevere pain. If you think you have a damaged filling, contact your emergency\ndentist right away before the vulnerable parts of your teeth get even more\ndamaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Bruxism <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bruxism is also known as teeth grinding, a habit that many\nof us aren\u2019t even aware we have since it often takes place while we sleep. If\nyou wake up with jaw, neck, or tooth pain, ask your dentist to evaluate your\nmouth for signs of grinding. He or she may then prescribe you with a nightguard\nto stop the habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Forceful Brushing <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many of us brush our teeth hard in the hopes that it will\nclean our teeth better, but that\u2019s actually not true. Brushing too hard can\nwear down the enamel and cause sensitivity. Be sure to clean gently with a\nsoft-bristled brush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Misaligned Teeth <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Teeth that aren\u2019t aligned properly can push up against one\nanother, resulting in pain. Talk to your dentist about potential orthodontic\nwork, or wisdom teeth removal. Wisdom teeth are notorious for pushing against\nmolars and causing pain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Orthodontic Alignment <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After you get your braces tightened or a new set of\nInvisalign aligners, your teeth may need some time to adjust to their new\nposition. However, if this discomfort persists for more than a few days,\ncontact your dentist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No matter the cause of your toothache, it\u2019s important to see\nyour dentist right away if you experience any severe pain. If you avoid seeing\na dentist, your toothache might get even worse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
